On arrival a white lamp above the outside floor indicator lights up. "Talk to me." "Hey, Joe. I'm about to leave now." I heard Demi's voice. I smiled. "Can't wait, babe. Tonight's going to be a night to remember." "Alright, I'm getting into my car now. See you soon." "Okay, Demz. See you then, love you." "Love you too." I hung up the phone and checked myself in the mirror. Looking good, Joe. Looking good. I took the box out of my pocket and opened it. Inside sat a ring. The ring I'd hope by the end of tonight would be on Demi's left hand. I took a deep breath. Tonight was the most important night of my life. I looked myself in the mirror again. I didn't want to look bad for tonight. I wasn't obsessed with my look, no matter how much my brothers teased me about it. I just liked to look good, was that a crime? No. I walked up and down the house for 5 minutes...this was strange. Usually Demi would be here by now. She only lived 5 minutes away by car. I sighed, girls. She was probably doing her hair again, or make-up. Or texting one of her girlfriends. But as time ticked on, soon half an hour passed, and then an hour. I'd been stood up. Rejected. Paul recounts his run-in with a canine cosmonaut and his ensuing involvement in a project of grand proportions: evolution itself. This excerpt features a chess game between Laika the Soviet space dog & inventor Nikola Tesla, who introduces the audience to the far-out 5th dimension.
